When my first son Noah was a great sleeper, I thought I had it all figured out. But when my second son Hugo came along, his sleep took a turn for the worse. Following the same sleep program that worked for Noah, I expected similar results. However, at 5 months, everything changed when Hugo got sick with COVID.
From that point on, Hugo’s sleep became a constant struggle. He relied on cuddles, rocking, and night feedings, and any progress we made would be interrupted by illness. I found myself adjusting to his irregular sleep patterns. The sleepless nights took a toll on my well-being, and I questioned whether I was failing as a parent.
“There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to baby sleep. What works for one baby may not work for another.”
It wasn’t until I had 24 hours away from my boys that I realized the impact of sleep deprivation on me and our family. I had been putting on a brave face, but it was time to face the sleep challenges head-on. I realized that I needed to change my approach to sleep training. I had been trying to force Hugo to sleep through the night, but this only worsened things. I needed to be more gentle and patient.
I started by refreshing my knowledge of the ‘Taking Cara Babies’ program as well as researching more gentle sleep programs. I found the “Gentle Sleep Coach” and “Gentle Sleep Specialist” programs to be particularly helpful. These programs focus on helping babies learn to sleep through the night without crying.
I also started working with my husband to create a consistent sleep routine for Hugo. We made sure that he had a calming bedtime routine and that he had a good routine throughout the day and appropriate wake windows.
The first few nights were tough, but we persisted. After a few weeks, I started to see results. Hugo started sleeping for longer stretches at night. He was also more content during the day.
“Be patient and persistent. It may take some time for your baby to learn to sleep through the night.”
One significant change we made was prioritizing Hugo’s first nap at home, setting the foundation for better sleep throughout the day. Consistency became our guiding principle, and it made a world of difference.
Throughout this journey, I’ve had moments of self-reflection. I realized that I had accepted the status quo and forgotten that there are always solutions to explore. I’m grateful for the peaceful nights spent with Hugo, cherishing the quiet moments and the bond we share.
Conquering sleep challenges has brought a newfound sense of peace and harmony to our household. It’s not just about the sleep; it’s about reclaiming our well-being and strengthening our family’s foundation. Every morning, as I see Hugo wake up with a smile on his face, I’m reminded of the power of a good night’s sleep.
If you’re facing sleep struggles with your little one, know that there is hope. Reflect on your journey and reach out for support. Remember, you’re not alone, and there are solutions waiting to be discovered. Embrace the challenge, and together, let’s conquer sleep and create brighter days for our families. #ConqueringSleep #RestfulNights #SleepSolutions #FamilyWellbeing #SelfReflection
